It’s my genre of choice, but it isn't just about steamy scenes (though that’s definitely part of the draw). I love it because it’s a genre that dives deep into the emotional and physical connections between characters, exploring desire, intimacy, and the complexities of love.
This genre has become incredibly popular because it offers readers a chance to experience the thrill of romance with an added layer of sensuality. Erotic romance taps into our fantasies and desires, but it also brings rich characters and compelling plots to the table. It's not just about the heat—it's about how it intertwines with the characters' journeys and their growth as individuals and partners.
It was recently suggested to me that the term “erotic” sounds old and has been dumped in favor of spicy romance, but I’m gonna push back on that! Spicy is relative. Categorizing your books as erotic romance, however, tells the reader that explicit, intimate scenes will occur on the page. This is part of what makes these filthy little stories so captivating and why they continue to hold a special place in readers' hearts. We'll explore the elements that make a great erotic romance, discuss why this genre resonates so deeply, and offer some insights into how it blends emotional depth with sensual storytelling. Often confused with contemporary romance, I think it’s important to stop and give y’all the definition of this subgenre. At its core, erotic romance is a subgenre of romance that places a strong emphasis on the physical and emotional aspects of intimacy between characters. It's all about exploring the chemistry and connection between two people but with a focus on sensuality and desire.
What sets erotic romance apart from other romance subgenres? While all romance novels are driven by the development of a romantic relationship, erotic romance goes a step further by making the physical and emotional intimacy a central element of the story. Having that said, there are some darker themes where enthusiastic consent doesn’t necessarily work with the narrative. In that case, including trigger and content warnings can go a long way!

Tropes and Themes with a Twist: All of the tropes and themes used in other subgenres can be used here, but there are some like, like BDSM, forbidden love, and alpha/beta dynamics, that are more common in erotic romance. I will state that it’s refreshing and fun to see folks subverting these tropes in different ways.
